Mission Festival

June 17, 2007    9:00am

Thank You for sharing this time of worship with us.  We're glad you're here!  Do come again!  If you do not have a local church home, we invite you to make your home with us.  You will find Christian love, opportunities for spiritual growth, warm friendships, and an appreciation of being part of God’s family.

Please Don’t Rush Off After The Worship Service.  Stay for a Power Point presentation of the Schultz’s past year in Peru.  A potluck dinner will follow – and you’re all invited.  We hope you are able to stay!

Large Print Hymnals and personal sound devices are available at the usher's station to help make worship more meaningful for those who may appreciate such assistance.  Just ask one of the ushers before the service.

¨       In an age of anxiety, we still believe that peace comes from Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

¨       In an age of confusion, we still believe that the Bible is the Word of God, inerrant and infallible.

¨       In an age of doubt, we still believe that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.

¨       In an age of guilt, we still believe that Jesus died on the cross to remove the power of sin and Satan from our lives.

¨       In an age of reason, we still believe that God is at work in the sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion.

¨       In an age of constant change, we still believe in the unchanging Holy Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON:  Ezekiel 33:7-11

"Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from Me. When I say to the wicked, 'O wicked man, you will surely die,' and you do not speak out to dissuade him from his ways, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. But if you do warn the wicked man to turn from his ways and he does not do so, he will die for his sin, but you will have saved yourself.

"Son of man, say to the house of Israel, 'This is what you are saying: "Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away because of them. How then can we live?" “Say to them, 'As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, O house of Israel?'

THE EPISTLE LESSON:  Romans 10:8-17

But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in Him will never be put to shame."

For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-- the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on Him, for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

How, then, can they call on the One they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the One of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"

But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our message?" Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

THE GOSPEL LESSON:  Luke 10:1-12

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of Him to every town and place where He was about to go. He told them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

"When you enter a house, first say, 'Peace to this house.' If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you. Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.

"When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick who are there and tell them, 'The kingdom of God is near you.' But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 'Even the dust of your town that sticks to our feet we wipe off against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near.' I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.”

The Lord's Supper is being celebrated today. This special meal, instituted by Christ, unites us with Him and our brothers and sisters in the faith. This sacrament is intended for those who are baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; trust in Jesus Christ as the only way to heaven; and believe that the true body and blood of Jesus are present with the bread and wine of Holy Communion.  Guests who share this faith are invited to speak with the pastor before joining us in this holy meal.

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers in the congregation this morning!  Thank you, Lord, for our human fathers.  May they continue to point us always to You, our Heavenly Father, and may they display Your fatherly love and all they do and say.

Special Music for today’s service is offered up to the Lord by the “Cantabile Quartet” of which Mark Sauer is a member.  Our thanks for the quartet’s participation in our Mission Festival Service.

Sincere Thanks to Pastor Norb Meier for serving as liturgist this morning, and to Missionary Terry Schultz of Lima, Peru, for bringing us a message from God’s holy Word.  May the Lord bless his message!  Thanks also to Mary and Terry for their mission presentation following today’s Worship Service.
