The Second Sunday After Pentecost
Baccalaureate Service

June 10, 2007    9:00am

Thank You for sharing this time of worship with us.  We're glad you're here!  Do come again!  If you do not have a local church home, we invite you to make your home with us.  You will find Christian love, opportunities for spiritual growth, warm friendships, and an appreciation of being part of God’s family.

Please Don’t Rush Off After The Worship Service!  A reception is being held for our graduates in the Fellowship Hall, and you’re all invited.  We hope you are able to stay!

Large Print Hymnals and personal sound devices are available at the usher's station to help make worship more meaningful for those who may appreciate such assistance.  Just ask one of the ushers before the service.

¨       In an age of anxiety, we still believe that peace comes from Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

¨       In an age of confusion, we still believe that the Bible is the Word of God, inerrant and infallible.

¨       In an age of doubt, we still believe that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.

¨       In an age of guilt, we still believe that Jesus died on the cross to remove the power of sin and Satan from our lives.

¨       In an age of reason, we still believe that God is at work in the sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion.

¨       In an age of constant change, we still believe in the unchanging Holy Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We Gather To Worship The Lord

Order of Service:      Service of the Word, page 38 in front of the hymnal

Hymns:                   471       405       455       510

Message:                Galatians 1:6-7

                              “Don’t Be Thrown Into Confusion!

THE FIRST LESSON:  I Kings 8:22-23,41-43

Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in front of the whole assembly of Israel, spread out his hands toward heaven and said: "O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven above or on earth below-- You who keep Your covenant of love with Your servants who continue wholeheartedly in Your way...

"As for the foreigner who does not belong to Your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of Your name-- for men will hear of Your great name and Your mighty hand and Your outstretched arm-- when he comes and prays toward this temple, then hear from heaven, Your dwelling place, and do whatever the foreigner asks of You, so that all the peoples of the earth may know Your name and fear You, as do Your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears Your Name.

THE SECOND LESSON:  Galatians 1:1-10

Paul, an apostle-- sent not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead-- and all the brothers with me, To the churches in Galatia: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave Himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to Whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-- which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.

But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

THE GOSPEL LESSON:  Luke 7:1-10

When Jesus had finished saying all this in the hearing of the people, He entered Capernaum. There a centurion's servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to Him, asking Him to come and heal his servant.

When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with Him, "This man deserves to have You do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue."

So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to Him: "Lord, don't trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

When Jesus heard this, He was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following Him, He said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel."

Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
