The Fifth Sunday After The Epiphany

February 4, 2007    9:00am

God's Blessings To All Who Worship With Us Today!  Lord, help us to make Your house a home where those who are here will want to remain, where those who visit will want to return, and where those who have left will want to come back.  May God's Spirit fill your hearts with joy and peace through the knowledge of His love for you in Jesus.  Visitors, we want you to feel at home in our midst.  Please know that you are welcome!

The Lord's Supper is being celebrated today. This special meal, instituted by Christ, unites us with Him and our brothers and sisters in the faith. This sacrament is intended for those who are baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; trust in Jesus Christ as the only way to heaven; and believe that the true body and blood of Jesus are present with the bread and wine of Holy Communion.  Guests who share this faith are invited to speak with the pastor before joining us in this holy meal.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON                                                                                                                                  Isaiah 6:1-8

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of His robe filled the temple.  Above Him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.  And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory."  At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

"Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty."  Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.  With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for."  Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"

EPISTLE LESSON                                                                                                                               I Corinthians 14:12b-20

Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.  For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says.  For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.  So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.

If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?  You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.  I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.  But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.  Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.

GOSPEL LESSON                                                                                                                                               Luke 5:1-11

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around Him and listening to the word of God, He saw at the water's edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.  He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then He sat down and taught the people from the boat.

When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch."  Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because You say so, I will let down the nets."  When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.  So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!"  For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men."  So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed Him.

* DISTRIBUTION HYMN                                                                                                            (sung to the tune of Hymn #278)

Come in holy awe and truth, Brothers, sisters, to the altar:

Teens, now in the bloom of youth, Elders, come with steps that falter;

All, of great or no renown, Here, to God, we stand as one.

Those who live by cares oppressed, Those who scamper through life gaily,

Those who know unruffled rest, Those who weep in sorrow daily,

Friends and e--ne-mies, as one, Boldly come, approach the Throne.

By one cup and by one bread In one body, Lord, unite us;

By the blood the Savior shed Now with peace and joy delight us;

Speak the good news once again, What more cause to sing "Amen!"

By one washing, by one creed, Each to all one Father binds us,

One the hope on which we feed, One the grace that seeks and finds us;

Joined in love together so, To one Table let us go.

Here ourselves we consecrate To all truth, to love, to justice;

By this action let us state What a holy people's trust is;

Show to all the Christ who lives, Eat and drink the food He gives.

Tears of loneliness replace With new tears of happy laughter,

Children of adopting grace, See the home the world strives after:

Ours it is when we are one With the Father and the Son.
